Education Support Schools Model
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award provides excellent learning opportunities and recognition for students in education support schools, programs and centres.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Framework is available for 14-24 year olds, and is dynamic and flexible to suit diverse needs. Students using the Framework are supported by the school and staff, using class time to complete their activities. Schools can dedicate a class or subject per week to each of the Framework Sections.
Additional leadership opportunities are available for Silver and Gold holders, who can provide support and guidance for younger students, leading to the creation of a strong Duke of Ed community. Schools that offer the Duke of Ed are also supported by staff in the Award Operating Authority, The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award – Western Australia. Duke of Ed Centres are provided training, resources, and opportunities to partner with other organisations.
Duke of Ed Coordinator Support – EmpowerAbility Officer
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award – WA has partnered with Cahoots to further support education support schools, programs and centres through a dedicated EmpowerAbility Officer.
Their role is to assist with the implementation of the Duke of Ed Framework, assisting with tasks such as Online Record Book management, funding applications and information sessions
Funding
To ensure all young people have access to the Framework, there are various funding streams available to schools.
The funding can assist with registrations, the Adventurous Journey and staff support. Funding is also available for young people requiring additional supports. Applications can be made online, through the Duke of Ed Funding Assistance page at www.dukeofed.com.au.
Individual or Group National Disadvantaged Youth Funding
Duke of Ed Leaders can apply on behalf of individuals or groups requiring financial assistance to use the Framework. The funding seeks to partially or fully cover registration fees and other costs associated with completing each Level of the Framework.
Specialised Duke of Ed Centre Funding
A Specialised Duke of Ed Centre is a partner that can access our co-employment funding to subsidise the costs of delivering the Duke of Ed Framework in a school or organisation where there are groups of young people experiencing increased needs.
Our grants co-fund the cost of one or more employed Duke of Ed Leaders up to a maximum of 60% of the application’s funding. Additionally, Specialised Duke of Ed Centres can apply to partially or fully cover expenses, depending on the situation, to a maximum of 40% for 20-100 users. The maximum amount per User is $1,000 and is capped at $100,000 depending on the number of Users for the total application.
The Framework
Registered Users often have most of their Framework requirements built into their curriculum and Individual Learning Plans, with class time allocated to completing these activities. Individuals can choose from several options to ensure the activity meets their interests. Schools may arrange a Voluntary Service activity where the whole class can take part within the school or in the wider community. For young people with limited mobility, the Physical Recreation Sections can be adapted to include activities that are accessible and suited to their abilities.
The Adventurous Journey is undertaken as a class with support from their Duke of Ed Leader. Individuals are supported by their Duke of Ed Leader and the school throughout the Adventurous Journey, including planning, practising, using specific equipment, and risk assessment. Parent and families are engaged throughout the process to ensure each Adventurous Journey is accessible.
Cahoots can offer an Adventurous Journey to suit all needs.
